The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I walk into the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and being named best player.
A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
