The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
