An informant has revealed a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned confidential technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk

The source, called Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the data leak were instructed to change residences and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from militant forces.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive leak of confidential data affecting approximately 19k individuals who had asked to relocate to the UK to avoid militant rule.

Data Disclosure Happened

A spreadsheet containing private information, including names, contact details and in some cases household data, was accidentally leaked by an official employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident came to light in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to settle in Britain appeared on social media.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is this misconception that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” she told MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can trace your precise location. That's precisely what the unit did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Initial findings provided to the investigation estimated that at least 49 kin and co-workers of people concerned by the incident had been murdered.

A legal restriction about the breach was put in force in last year and restricted relevant facts about it from public disclosure until July 2025.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she was working with advised individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.

“We advised that they moved when possible and switched their contact details. Those were the crucial data that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would lead to their location being found,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The source disputed that an official review carried out by a former official had been wrong to determine that the possession of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they live secretly. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

The source explained disturbing treatment suffered by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“Instances include young kids who have had their arms broken to pressure households to say where someone is,” she testified.
