Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Jail Diary Chronicling Three Weeks Behind Bars
The ex-president of France is preparing a book this autumn titled A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his time served in custody.
The revelation came shortly following Sarkozy gained freedom as he appeals his conviction on charges of illegal collaboration connected to efforts to obtain presidential race money linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.
Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections
“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he reflects in an extract, implying the account centers around his reflections from solitary confinement instead of a broader observation regarding the packed and crisis-hit jail system in France.
“Silence escapes me, which is missing in La Santé, where noise is a lot to hear,” he adds. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is fortified in prison.”
Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle
At his release request hearing, Sarkozy had appeared remotely from inside the facility, describing his time inside as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this nightmare tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”
“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship I must endure. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark every inmate because it’s gruelling.”
Historical Context
The former president, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the first leader since WWII from France to experience jail.
Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.
Reading Material
It is not certain did he manage to read and critique the three books he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, in which a blameless person is imprisoned then breaks out to take revenge.
Life in Confinement
The former leader was held in isolation for his own security in a space roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards occupied the next cell.
It was stated his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay worried that any food may have been contaminated. Although he had access for self-catering yet he declined, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.
Lawyer’s Statements
The legal representative, who visited his client daily throughout the jail term, informed the court security would be better out of prison than inside. “There were menacing messages, listened to yells at night and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Legal Proceedings
His incarceration began last month when the judiciary gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.
He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and another court case is scheduled for the coming spring.
