Move Over, Rupert Murdoch: Is Lord Rothermere Set to Become the UK's Leading Media Mogul?
Waiting two decades for another chance to secure a coveted business purchase is a luxury not afforded to many executives. The Rothermere family, however, adopts a more relaxed approach to timing.
While the majority of corporate boards draw up short-term strategies, the Rothermeres, having built a formidable media conglomerate over over one hundred years, are used to planning in terms of generations.
A Much-Anticipated Bid
It was in the year 2004 that Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, the distinguished owner of the Daily Mail, failed in his bid to purchase the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
By Rothermere’s assessment, the setback delighted the media magnate because it would have created a portfolio of conservative newspapers influential enough to rival the “unique political leverage” of his publications.
The reserved Rothermere, though, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The Telegraph titles were again put up for sale in 2023. From that point, two prospective owners have entered and exited, both after staff rebellions over their appropriateness. Rothermere has now made his move.
Family Legacy
As a result, the 57-year-old has reinforced his dynastic passion with British newspapers, after his forebears bought, sold and smashed together some of the most prominent publications of their day.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” said a media analyst. “This sounds a bit cheesy, but he’s genuinely passionate about journalism. “I believe they have long aimed to consolidate media outlets catering to centre-right readers.”
Significant challenges persist before the hereditary peer’s DMGT group can secure the publications. In addition to regulatory and diversity issues, staff members are questioning how he will stump up the half-billion-pound price tag. Nevertheless, his aspirations of creating a right-leaning media giant have been rekindled.
Out of the Limelight
It was a bold bid for a proprietor who prides himself on remaining out of the public eye, often noting his willingness to let the combative opinions of the Daily Mail contradict his own moderate, Europhile stance.
With the Rothermeres, though, purchasing media assets are a dynastic tradition. An image of Alfred Harmsworth, his great-great-uncle who established the Daily Mail in 1896, dominates Rothermere’s office. A childhood recollection was of his father, Vere, bringing him to the printing facilities.
Journalistic Roots
In his youth would be involved in discussions about the challenging launch for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He recalls the pressure of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s Evening Standard, which he eventually divested.
He personally flirted with journalism, working as a subeditor and reporter on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before concentrating on the business side of his dynastic empire. Upon his father's passing in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon arriving back from the hospital before business communications began, effectively starting his leadership of DMGT, at thirty years old.
Strategic Focus
He has previously sold off lucrative segments of the business to refocus on the Mail and other newspaper assets. The Telegraph bid is the latest sign of his eagerness to reaffirm the dynastic press dominance. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” said a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
Rothermere’s decision to delist the company in 2021 has also made the Telegraph pursuit easier. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he said shortly after the move.
Press Freedom
Intervening to change the Telegraph’s editorial line would be out of character. A former editor told that both he and his predecessor interfered editorially.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he stated. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
Political Concerns
Amid the UK's political landscape appearing to shift to the conservative side, there are inevitable political concerns about combining the Mail and Telegraph at a time when both have been increasing coverage of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Many liberal politicians believe the Mail’s abrasive style has become even starker in recent times, pointing to its championing of narratives pushed by Farage on immigration and the “progressive” agenda. Others argue the Telegraph has undergone an more extreme transformation, often running far-right opinion pieces that exceed those of the Mail.
Financial Questions
There are numerous questions about how an individual possessing Rothermere’s assets has the funds. Most media analysts estimate that a more realistic price tag for the titles is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is willing to pay a premium.
The company lacks a ready £500m, the sum apparently insisted upon by the current holders as they seek to recover the loan that secured ownership of the titles previously.
Long-Term Outlook
He has committed to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, viewing them as serving distinct readerships – broadsheet and mid-market. Nonetheless, there are concerns inside both titles over reductions and the future strategy, given the condition of the newspaper industry.
Once more, the dynasty has demonstrated a readiness to take drastic action when necessary. In the past was attempting to save an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he combined it with the Daily Sketch, dismissing numerous staff in the aftermath.
Approval Process
A government minister has requested that the involved parties submit the intended acquisition to the authorities within three weeks, but the outstanding issues will mean the saga rumbles on well into next year.
“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” said an industry veteran. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”
His eldest son, thirty-one, Rothermere’s heir, is already being prepared to assume leadership of the family empire, holding a senior role in DMGT’s media business. If his responsibilities will encompass control of the Telegraph is the next great chapter in the Rothermere media saga.
