Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
