British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
